Prime Minister Mark Carney is preparing to unveil his highly anticipated inaugural phase of national infrastructure initiatives, featuring projects that stretch across Canada's three coastlines, including a major liquefied natural gas expansion, CTV News has learned.
Carney plans to reveal the first five approved projects during an announcement in Edmonton, Alberta, this Thursday.
Based on documentation obtained by CTV News, the approved projects include LNG Canada Phase 2 in Kitimat, British Columbia, which would double the country's liquefied natural gas output capacity.
While former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau previously maintained there was insufficient economic justification for Canadian LNG exports to Europe, Carney's administration has recently been actively marketing Canadian LNG to emerging markets, including Germany.
Last month, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson told "The Vassy Kapelos Show" that demand exists for Canadian LNG products.
The remaining four approved projects are:
- The Darlington New Nuclear Project in Clarington, Ontario - positioning Canada as the first G7 nation with an operational small modular reactor (SMR)
- The Contrecœur Terminal Container Project in Contrecœur, Quebec - expanding Port of Montréal capacity by roughly 60 percent
- The McIlvenna Bay Foran Copper Mine Project in east-central Saskatchewan
- The Red Chris Mine expansion in northwest British Columbia
CTV News has also confirmed that Carney will highlight additional projects currently in preliminary development phases, which require further progress before receiving federal construction commitments:
- Wind West Atlantic Energy project - harnessing over 50 GW of wind energy potential in Nova Scotia
- Pathways Plus - an Alberta carbon capture, utilization and storage initiative
- Arctic Economic Security Corridor - supporting northern critical mineral development and enhancing regional defense capabilities
- Port of Churchill Plus - modernizing Churchill Port facilities in Manitoba
- Alto High-Speed Rail - Canada's inaugural high-speed rail line, covering roughly 1,000 kilometers between Toronto and Quebec City
