Spectacular Photo of China High Speed Trains in Maintenance Yard

This photo of China's high speed bullet trains at the maintenance base in Wuhan is simply stunning. CRH380 (China Railway High-speed) Harmony bullet trains are seen at a high-speed train maintenance base in Wuhan, Hubei province, early December 25, 2012. China will open the world's longest high-speed rail line this week when a link between Beijing and the southern metropolis of Guangzhou is inaugurated, officials said on Saturday, underscoring its commitment to a trouble-plagued transport scheme. Compare this to Canada, the Harper Tories budget cuts have resulted in cities like Kitchener, Guelph, Niagara Falls, Stratford, London, Moncton and Halifax losing passenger rail service this year.

Taiwan High Speed Rail 200 millionth passenger

Taipei, Dec. 17 (CNA) Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp. has carried its 200 millionth passenger, marking a milestone in the company's high-speed railway service that has been operating for more than five years, a spokesman for the company said Monday. The landmark passenger appeared earlier in the day, and the company was checking on the identity of the person, who will win a prize of a year's-worth of unlimited free non-reserved seat tickets for travel on the high-speed railway, the spokesman said. The company would be able to identify the lucky passenger very quickly if the person bought the ticket via a smart phone or credit card. If cash was used to make the payment, however, it would take longer, the spokesman said. The company was scheduled to announce the identity of the 200 millionth passenger the following day, the spokesman added, noting that the ticket-buyers on either side of the winning passenger will each be given eight free business-class tickets. Bombardier Loses ACELA Contract

MONTREAL — Amtrak has scrapped plans to add 40 Bombardier Inc. cars to its Acela high-speed train line, judging them “too expensive” and “not based on reasonable cost.” In addition, the U.S. rail operator has decided to replace Bombardier’s entire original Acela fleet of 120 cars and 40 locomotives on the line inaugurated in 2000, the first and still only high-speed rail line in North America, linking Washington, New York and Boston. An internal report by Amtrak’s auditor-general said that after issuing a sole-source contract (to Bombardier), the railway received a proposal for the 40 cars on Feb. 27. “Given the high dollar value and Amtrak’s plan to award a sole-source contract,” the report states, “we initiated a review of the price proposal to determine whether it was based on well-supported and reasonable cost and pricing data.” Read more :
