Martin Imbleau CEO of Via HFR is on the Right Track

  Martin Imbleau CEO of VIA HFR is on the Right Track  Martin Imbleau is the CEO of Via HFR Inc., a wholly owned Crown corporation that will report to Parliament through the Minister of Transport. He is giving interviews to the public about the challenges they face implementing faster, modern passenger rail service between Quebec and Ontario. It is refreshing to hear such straightforward, frank, open discussion on the issues facing the High-Frequency Rail project. Mr. Imbleau is quick to highlight the biggest challenge, which is, how to enter and exit the big cities quickly. He also has stated on numerous occasions that “It's not about frequency only. It's about being fast. It's about being reliable.” He even realizes the singular-focused name of the project "High Frequency Rail" needs to be changed. What a difference in Mr. Imbleau’s approach to that of the former VIA Rail CEO Yves Desjardins-Siciliano, now a Siemens employee.  During his tenure at VIA, Desjardi...

Is High-Speed Rail Back on the Agenda for Ontario and Quebec?

 Ontario and Quebec High-Speed Rail Provincially, the Special Advisor for High-Speed Rail the Honourable David Collenette delivered his report : High Speed Rail in Ontario in December 2016.The Ontario provincial government under Liberal Kathleen Wynne was committed to building high-speed rail between Windsor and Quebec City. There was renewed enthusiasm that just maybe Canada could join the modern world and have a fast, efficient, safe, passenger rail transit system. Sadly, the election of the Ford government brought an end to the idea as they shelved high-speed rail. The Ford government has pursued a   neanderthal method of transportation planning with the building of more highway lanes and announcing a new highway. (Hwy#413).  This newfound optimism for the building of high-speed rail has nothing to do with the Ford government. Federally, then president and CEO of VIA Rail Canada Yves Desjardins-Siciliano, now Siemens employee, was telling anyone that would listen in...

Understanding the Alstom - Bombardier Deal from A Canadian Prospective

As I drove by the abandoned Rona home improvement store in my community, I wondered if the sale of Bombardier to Alstom would result in substantial job losses in Canada. In 2016, the American hardware giant Lowe’s bought Quebec-based Rona Inc. The result was the closing of 34 stores.  In 2017, the transportation giants France based multinational Alstom and Germany based multinational Siemens AG wanted to merge to fight off the growing threat of the national Chinese rail company, China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC). Bombardier was also trying to merge with Siemens AG. Siemens AG picked Alstom to merge their train divisions with. European competition authorities nixed the idea. Now France-based multinational Alstom has come to an agreement to buy the half-a-century-old train division of Bombardier Transportation for US $6.7 billion. According to the Montreal Gazette newspaper, the deal will see the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec become Alstom’s biggest shareholder ...

Vermont to Montreal Passenger Rail Service Within Two Years?

I have had a passion for restoring Canada/USA passenger rail services for as long as I can remember. Having seen cross border trains disappear that I had rode on such as at the Detroit/Windsor and Sarnia/Port Huron borders, I want to support increased reliable passenger rail between Canada and the USA. No this has nothing to do with high speed but it has all to do with providing options to travel by train. The former Amtrak train The Montrealer ran from 1972 to 1995. Now a determined effort is being made to extend The Vermonter train to Montreal.  The recent draft 2015 State of Vermont Rail Plan states;
