Job Posting - Advisor, Civil Engineer - Ministry of Transportation (Includes High Speed Rail!)

Be part of the team that will advise and support the largest rail infrastructure project in North America! This is a unique and progressive advisory engineering role. You will have the opportunity to apply your extensive rail engineering expertise and consultative services as part of a multi-disciplinary team to support the Minister's oversight of Metrolinx and other Delivery Agencies. Metrolinx is responsible for the planning, operation and implementation of the GO Transit network to Regional Express Rail (RER). You will be part of a centre of excellence to support the Ministry of Transportation's (MTO) rail initiatives including high speed rail, rapid transit and rail safety.

 This position will require someone who can ask critical questions, explain technical information, and provide advisory services. This is a once-in-a-career opportunity. What can I expect to do in this role?


 In this role, you will:
 • Provide professional advisory services and civil engineering expertise to support the Minister's oversight of Metrolinx.
• Provide technical engineering expertise as part of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver advice and support to other MTO rail initiatives such as high speed rail, other rapid transit projects and rail safety.
• Translate, simplify and explain civil engineering information related to rail-based transportation systems.
• Support and make recommendations for the design of the RER infrastructure; participate in peer reviews; ask critical questions; evaluate, translate and share information; provide advice.
• Provide support, guidance and assess impacts of applicable legislation and railway operating rules affecting rail service delivery, expansions, additions and improvements of systems and electrification design. Location: Toronto

 How do I qualify? Mandatory
 • Applicants must be licensed with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) or be in a position to obtain the accreditation as a condition of employment Engineering Knowledge
• Knowledge of construction methods and practices utilized in civil and railroad engineering, including the construction, maintenance and operations of railway structures and railroad design practices
• Knowledge of rail/track structures, grade separations, drainage, bridges, tunnels, signal systems, rolling stock, structures, stations, environmental requirements and electrification of rail Civil Engineering Knowledge • Knowledge of the theory, principles and practices of civil engineering including infrastructure construction and railway engineering Analytical Skills
• Ability to understand and interpret technical engineering drawings, specifications and requirements
• Ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation (e.g. Metrolinx Act, Bridges Act, GO Transit Act, Railways Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Environmental Assessment Act, Drainage Act, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act) • Ability to assess situations, identify problems, develop and evaluate solutions, and make recommendations that are technically sound and consistent with ministry policy Advisory and Consultative Skills
• Ability to perform peer reviews of redesigns, proposals, studies, testing, recommendations and decisions
• Ability to provide engineering expertise and solutions, new construction and maintenance technologies, review construction and maintenance contracts, and to identify/alleviate concerns, propose alternatives, make substantiated technical decisions, and present recommendations Project Management Skills
• Ability to review and organize concurrent, complex infrastructure construction projects
• Ability to project forecast and budget to understand or prepare project estimates to be utilized in business cases
