McILVEEN: With aid from Ottawa, passenger rail could make comeback

There were sighs of relief in the Maritimes on Monday when Transportation Minister Lisa Raitt made it official: Ottawa will commit $10.2 million to upgrade the CN line from Bathurst to Miramichi used only by Via Rail. It was an about-face for Sydney native Raitt, who said earlier this year that Ottawa would not put any money into the railway. The New Brunswick government and CN promised to invest $25 million and $30 million respectively to upgrade sections of the track to keep freight moving — but not the 71 kilometres known as the Newcastle subdivision, which was to be sold or abandoned. And Via, yet another Crown corporation that has been coping with funding cuts from Ottawa, said it couldn’t afford to buy the track and might have to cancel passenger rail service to the Maritimes. Besides being part of Canada’s storied sea-to-sea passenger train service, the Ocean ferries residents of various northern New Brunswick communities to and from Moncton and centres like Bathurst and Mi

Alberta Study suggest It is Not Ready for High Speed Rail

No real surprise here, that the study states that for the Edmonton-Calgary corridor it is to early to put in high speed rail. The lack of any passenger rail service between Calgary and Edmonton is tragic. Alberta is catching up to Ontario in the race for the number of high speed rail studies completed with no action taken... http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/alberta/Alberta+ready+high+speed+rail+link+report/9844254/story.html

Talgo High Speed Rail Trainsets to Be Moved. Talgo to pursue damages in court.

http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/talgo-set-to-move-idled-high-speed-trains-to-indiana-storage-facility-b99270470z1-259278631.html Talgo, the Spanish train manufacturer that's abandoning its Milwaukee headquarters, is about to transport its two high-speed trains from the city's north side to an Amtrak maintenance facility in Indiana to save on storage costs. The exact date of the move is still being coordinated, Talgo spokeswoman Nora Friend said. The company is paying for the move and the storage. The destination, the Beech Grove Shops in Beech Grove, Ind., is Amtrak's primary heavy maintenance and overhaul facility. The train sets have been idling at a factory in the Century City development on the north side of Milwaukee, an arrangement that brought $29,000 a month in rent to the city. Friend didn't say how much Amtrak was charging for storage. The trains were originally commissioned in 2009 by Wisconsin for its Hiawatha passenger service between Chicago
