The second mostly commonly asked question to me after "Will Canada Ever Have Modern Passenger Rail Service" is "How do high speed trains run in winter conditions"? We have loaded on the High Speed Rail Canada Website under the News Section tab, and in this blog, the Swedish National Railways 2006 study titled, " High Speed Train Operation in Winter Conditions ". It is an excellent paper explaining the various elements that could play a factor in operating high speed trains in the winter. Our mandate is to educate Canadians on high speed rail and this paper certainly adds to our body of knowledge on this subject matter. Paul Langan

Boston to Montreal High Speed Rail Link Promoted Again

Raymond Chrétien met with the Secretary of Transportation for the five New England states recently to promote a high speed rail connection to Montreal. With Amtrak's recent proposal for true high speed between Washington and Boston and the existing Acela service is the time right to dream of a Montreal-Boston high speed rail? High Speed Rail Canada has discussed the Montreal-Boston link in a previous blog . The various stakeholders (eg; state and federal governments, railroad companies) involved on the USA side make implementing high speed rail a real challenge. On the Canadian side only a lack of a federal passenger rail vision prohibits a Boston to Montreal high speed train. Congratulations to Raymond Chrétien, Premier Jean Charest's point man on high speed rail linkages between Canada and the USA for promoting the idea. There is no rationale to have only road and air based transportation options between Canada and the USA. The current painfully slow passenger rail option be

China 416kph "World Fastest Train" Video Added to High Speed Rail Canada Youtube Station

It was all over the news September 20, 2010, China had set the world' fastest train record at 416kph. Well not entirely true as the french TGV record is 574.8 kph and Japan's Maglev went 581 kph. One thing for sure China is a world leader in high speed passenger rail. The China HSR rail video clip is from Chinese TV. We loaded it on to our High Speed Rail Canada's YouTube Station for the whole world to see. Enjoy

Is it Time for the Return of the Jet Train!

It all started innocently enough. For some reason the last few months I have received several emails asking the whereabouts of Bombardier’s Jet Train. The Bombardier Jet train, with its turbine engines has not been seen since it was on display in Florida in 2003. Unfortunately, the development and introduction of the Jet Train was during a time when a guy named Bush was president in the USA and another guy named Bush the governor of Florida. Combine that bad luck with a finance minister in Canada who used to own a bus company. The end result was no money was allocated to purchase Bombardier’s Jet Train. Fast forward a few years and things have changed a whole lot in the USA with pro-rail President Obama investing in and improving existing rail corridors that would suit the Jet Train. In Canada since the government has no plan for passenger rail it is hard to imagine those in power doing anything proactive like utilizing the Jet Train to improve VIA’s present service. But if the governm
